Radioactive bananas? Well, I never!

What a pleasure it was to join forces with one of our longstanding suppliers, Pioneer Foods, to deliver an excellent talk to the children at Maryport C of E Primary School today.

John Cowen, Pioneer’s Butchery Sales Manager and ingredients enthusiast delivered a fantastic and animated workshop to the Year 6’s, who were eager to find out more about where the ingredients in the lunches comes from and learn some impressive (and surprising) facts about special ingredients brought along to the session. As well as explaining why ingredients such as mackerel and spinach should be the stars of everyone’s meal times, John also shocked us all by revealing that bananas are actually radioactive (albeit, in very small doses!)

The discussion forms part of a 6 weeks collaboration between Orian and Maryport C of E to create a ‘Hungry Heroes’ recipe book, with the purpose of enthusing other children and adults to cook simple, nutritious and delicious meals themselves at home. The ‘Master Chefs of Maryport’ will also be filming demos of their recipes to share on social media to promote their book. With Orian’s expertise as foodservice providers and the knowledge gained from professionals like John, we’re sure they’ll be in with a chance of winning a prize in this year’s Bright Stars competition!
