Allergen Safety in Schools: Why Orian Is Already Ahead of the Curve

From September 2026, new statutory guidance will require all schools in England to strengthen how they manage allergies. This is a significant and welcome step forward in protecting children.

At Orian, we fully support this development. Safeguarding children with allergies is not simply about compliance with legislation; it is about trust. Every day, thousands of parents trust us to provide safe, nutritious meals for their children. That responsibility demands robust systems, transparency and constant vigilance.

The important point is this: the systems the new guidance seeks to embed are already part of how we operate.

Operating at Scale, With Control

In just one week (02–06 February 2026), Orian served 84,930 meals through our School Hub system. Of those, 583 were allergy-free meals, representing less than 1% of total meals served.

While the proportion may be small, each of those meals represents a child whose safety depends on precision, accuracy and process. When operating at this scale, allergen management cannot rely solely on manual checks or paper-based records. It must be built into the infrastructure of the service itself.

That is exactly what we have done.

School Hub: Built for Compliance

Orian’s School Hub is our proprietary meal management system — designed, built and owned by us.

It stores allergen information within both recipes and individual pupil profiles, covering the 14 major allergens. Where an allergen recorded in a child’s profile matches an allergen contained within a recipe, the system automatically restricts that meal from being selected.

This is not a manual warning. It is a built-in control.

Where pupils have allergies beyond the 14 major allergens, these can also be recorded within their individual profiles. This ensures kitchen teams have full visibility and can carry out comprehensive checks prior to service.

In addition, parents can access allergen and nutritional information and can request further ingredient declarations if required. Transparency is central to building confidence.

By embedding allergen management into our ordering and production systems, we reduce risk, improve consistency and strengthen accountability.

Ownership Creates Advantage

A critical difference in Orian’s approach is that we own and control our system.

School Hub is not a third-party bolt-on platform. We control the data. We control the reporting. We control the development roadmap.

This means we can:

  • Adapt quickly to legislative changes
  • Strengthen reporting where needed
  • Record and analyse incidents accurately
  • Maintain full oversight of compliance performance

As statutory guidance evolves, we are not waiting for an external provider to update a product. We can respond immediately.

That level of control matters — particularly in a highly regulated environment.

Compliance and Commercial Strength Go Hand in Hand

There is sometimes an assumption that higher compliance means higher cost. In reality, the opposite can be true when systems are designed correctly.

Because we have invested in building our own integrated platform:

  • We avoid high ongoing licensing fees
  • We reduce duplication of administrative processes
  • We improve forecasting accuracy
  • We maintain tighter control over margins

That operational efficiency enables us to price competitively while protecting quality.

In practical terms, this means we can:

  • Invest more in ingredient quality
  • Expand menu variety
  • Enhance nutritional balance
  • Maintain financial sustainability for schools

Strong compliance and strong commercial performance are not in conflict, they reinforce one another.

Confidence for Schools and Parents

The forthcoming statutory guidance represents progress. It will raise standards and create greater consistency across the sector.

But compliance alone is not the goal. Our goal is confidence.

  • Confidence for schools that their catering partner operates with robust, system-led controls.
  • Confidence for parents that allergen information is accurate and accessible.
  • Confidence for children that their daily meals are prepared safely and responsibly.

At Orian, allergen safety is not a reaction to legislation. It is embedded in our systems, our data and our culture. We welcome the new guidance and we stand ready to support schools in implementing it effectively.

Every meal matters, every child matters and every parent deserves confidence in the food their child is served.
